SCC AGM Minutes 10/25/08 Seamen’s Inne, Mystic,CT

At 1300 Frank Herrera gave a brief welcome expressing how fortunate we were to have the ability, facility and freedom to
enjoy boating in on the beautiful East Coast.

There was an advisory concerning the necessity of liability insurance covering members during club functions. It
appears to be an unavoidable expense.
Ken Packie informed the members that the cost equaled the total value of the clubs annual dues. Any other expenses
have been taken out of a reserve created from initiation fees when the SCC was formed and are now depleted. More later

Frank continued with the plan for next years AGM asking if anyone had any objections to having the dinner at the Mystic
Aquarium and meetings at the Go Fish Restaurant a 2 minute walk away. This would be a unique experience and the cost
falls within the usual cost for such affairs @$100.00 PP. Everyone seemed enthusiastic about the idea.

Kathy Hodge, Membership: gave a brief history of the SCC from 2005 to the present when we have 22 members.

David Booth, Communications:  discussed the web page and Cruise News changes and use of PDF format.

John Scarborough, Cruising: covered the Summer cruising schedule- local, Maine and Nova Scotia. Rain, cold and fog
did not dissuade the Hodges and McKays from enjoying Canada.

Ken Packie, Commodore: Presented the 2009 slate of officers:
BOD Slate presented: Commodore,                  Ken Packie
                             Business,                          Frank Herrera
                             Finance,                            Pieter deZwart

Past Commodore,            Dennis McKay, Safety & Seamanship
A motion was made, seconded and the membership voted to approve the new board.

Ken discussed the expanding SCC membership and the ageing of members, different cruising goals and folks moving to
different locations away from the Stonington area.

Bylaw changes were presented and discussed:
1)        Proposal to change bylaw to reflect the permitting of two members of the one unit to serve on BOD at the same
time
Motion made to accept the by law change was: seconded, voted upon and passed.

2)        Proposal to allow both members of one unit one vote each.
Motion made to accept the by law change was: seconded, voted upon and passed.
On both motions the BOD must formulate the proper language that captures the intended spirit.

Next item was a reminder of a winter gathering in the Berkshires at the
“Red Lion Inn”, on January 9th and 10th, 2009. One accommodation unit has 9 bedrooms, 1 great room and 1 kitchen.
There are additional rooms available. Cross country skiing is available at the Inn and downhill within 30 minutes. Cost is
$190.00 PP/PN.

Pieter de Zwart then presented the Budget: All SCC expenses after the insurance are unfunded at this time. Therefore
we must raise the dues to $200.00. All of the cash used to pay expenses had come from the initiation fees of past
members and this has slowly been depleted by the cost of various club expenses.
Motion made to increase annual dues per unit to $200.00: Seconded, voted upon and passed.

Charlie Hodge, the new Cruise Director presented some new ideas to make the Club more user friendly to new members.
The establishment of a cruise mentoring program to introduce new members’ to night cruising by supervising them on a
hands overnight passage. This can be accomplished on one boat or two separate vessels and should include a night
harbor entrance to bring comfort and confidence to those expecting to make a overnight transit some time in the future.
Mentoring will also be available for those who feel the need of a little more experience or have questions regarding the
SCC type of cruising.
Richard Walter will be handling short and local cruising this year again but in a more defined position (Deputy Cruise
Director) . Next summer there will be postings of dates, anticipated routings and overnights for those interested in
joining these cruises.

Awards presentation for 2008:
John Scarborough presented the CRUISING Award to Serge  Pinto
Ken Packie presented the SPIRIT of SCC Award to Richard Walter
David Booth presented the SEAMANSHIP Award to Charles and Catherine Hodge.

The closing attraction was a slide presentation of the Bermuda 1-2 Race by Luis Meyer aboard “Strummer”. Laced with
good humor it was an interesting and enjoyable show with his daughter Emily filling in some of the details from her point
of view.
The meeting was adjourned at @ 1735.

Cocktails and dinner were followed by an interesting and informative presentation of the SCC long range cruise to Nova
Scotia by Charlie Hodge. Charlie and Cathy with the company of Dennis and Sue McKay. They took the fog, cold and poor
harbor information, from CCA books, in stride completing the trip in good spirits. They all had a great time. The beauty of
Nova Scotia made it all worth while.
