About SCC
Who We Are
The Stonington Cruising Club provides its members with
opportunities to participate in safe, well-planned, and
enjoyable local and offshore cruises.   The club also seeks to
further the yachting knowledge of its members and to
build relationships with other clubs in its cruising area.   To

Membership
Our  members are people who know each other well, enjoy
each others’ company, and are bound by a common
interest in coastal boating.
Each candidate for membership will need a sponsor who is
a current member.  That person is responsible for seeing
that candidates meet informally with other members and
for informing the candidate about the Club's nature and its
policies.
Invitations for membership are directed primarily to
individuals who own and actively use boats that are
moored or docked in the Stonington area and that are
capable of extended coastal cruising.
Participation in Club activities is a key requisite for
membership and willingness to help manage various Club
affairs also is a major plus.

New -- Drinking and Helming
A separate section on Safety and Seamanship is now open
on this site.   It features a new piece on drinking and
driving while on our boats and a comprehensive safety
check list.  Members who wish to add material to this
section should contact the Safety Officer.

2008 Annual Meeting
This year's annual meeting of Stonington Cruising Club will
be held from 2 pm through dinner on Saturday, October 25
at Seamans Inne on the grounds of the Mystic Seaport in
Mystic, CT.
A Premier
Association of
Cruising Yachtsmen
on the Eastern
Seaboard
From the very beginning the SCC has traditionally included a
long summer cruise in its seasonal schedule. This helps to focus
attention on three major interests - safety, seamanship and
camaraderie.
This year it was decided to plan an extension of the normal
Maine cruise on to Nova Scotia for those members looking for
new and different destinations and additional challenges.
Renewed emphasis will center on safety, weather, route planning
and efficient crew utilization.
Other short cruises and weekends are intended to accommodate
those who don't have the time to be away longer. All members
are encouraged to participate as much as their free time allows.

Cetacea Takes 3rd in Class in
Newport-Bermuda Race
Chris Culver's Cetacea (back on her Stonington mooring
above) crossed the finish line off Bermuda's St. David's
Lighthouse in just under 90 hours, corrected time, to grab third
place in its 13-boat Cruising Division class in this year's
Newport-Bermuda Race.  "We tore out two jibs and had to use
staysails in their place, but gained an advantage by going west to
pick up favorable wind angles," Culver said.  His crew included
two fellow SCC members, Charlie Hodge and Paul Cambridge.

This photo was taken by me at the site of the marina in Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego,
Argentina.  It's the southernmost city in the world, on the Beagle Channel, about 100 miles
south of the Straights of Magellan, and about 75 miles north of Cape Horn.  Ronna and I
were there in April, as the first of four stops on a hiking trip in Patagonia.  -- Arnie Ziegel
